Dnieper River Snowdrifts

Swirling snow drifts accent the terrain surrounding the Dnieper River, which flows for roughly 1,400 miles (2,200 km) from Russia to the Black Sea. The Dnieper is the longest river in the Ukraine and Belarus, and the fourth-longest river in Europe. This amazing image was captured by European Space Agency astronaut Thomas Pesquet while aboard the International Space Station in February 2017.

Ankara Residential Development

A residential section of northern Ankara, Turkey, is shown in this Overview. Ankara is Turkey’s capital and second largest city (after Istanbul), with more than 5.4 million residents. Historically known as Angora, the city lends its name to Angora wool, which is shorn from Angora rabbits and the long-haired Angora goat – the source of mohair.

The Bean

Cloud Gate -- nicknamed "The Bean" because of its shape -- is a public sculpture in the center of AT&T Plaza at Millennium Park in Chicago, Illinois. Created by Indian-born British sculptor Sir Anish Kapoor, it is made up of 168 stainless steel plates welded together and polished heavily to remove any seams. It is one of the most visited and photographed tourist attractions in Chicago, receiving upwards of 25 million visitors in 2017.

Maurtitius Ocean Currents

Just off the southwestern corner of Mauritius (shown at the center of this Overview) is what appears to be an underwater waterfall. In reality, it is just the flow of underwater currents and sand patterns on the ocean floor that form this spectacular optical illusion from the aerial perspective. Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, roughly 1,200 miles (2,000 km) off the southeastern coast of Africa.

A herd of cows is ushered into a milking parlor on a dairy farm in Chino, California. For years, Chino was a center of dairy farming in Southern California, providing milk products to much of the southwestern United States. The industry peaked in the 1980s, when Chino and its surrounding areas had more than 400 dairies; today only a few remain.

Moose River Tributaries

Tributaries of the Moose River snake across snowy terrain near Moosonee, a town in northern Ontario, Canada. This area is part of the Hudson Plains Ecozone, a sparsely populated subarctic region extending from the western coast of Quebec to the coast of Manitoba. The ecozone contains the largest continuous wetland in the world, including the Moose River’s 41,900-square-mile (108,500 sq. km) drainage basin.

Tanjung Perak

This Overview captures cargo ships and tankers moving through Tanjung Perak, the main port in Surabaya, Indonesia. Recent expansion and dredging here has deepened the waters to 16 meters (52.5 feet) and enabled a larger generation of containers ships to pass through safely. The facility’s principal exports are sugar, tobacco, and coffee.

Sarychev Peak

Sarychev Peak is located on Matua Island in the Kuril Islands of Russia. When the volcano erupted on June 11, 2009, the expulsion of debris caused significant interruption to air traffic between east Asia and North America. The eruption was also so great that astronauts aboard the International Space Station were able to photograph the plumes of ash and smoke rising from its cone, as the force of its shock waves dispersed all clouds covering the area.

Queens Unisphere

The Unisphere is a spherical stainless steel representation of the Earth, located in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in the New York City borough of Queens. Commissioned as part of the 1964 New York World’s Fair, the sculpture was dedicated to “man’s achievements on a shrinking globe in an expanding universe.” It is 140 feet (43 m) high and 120 feet (37 m) in diameter.

San Juan River

In this Overview, the San Juan River is shown meandering through southeastern Utah, not far from Goosenecks State Park. It is a major tributary of the Colorado River and provides drainage to the Four Corners region of Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Arizona. The San Juan is one of the muddiest rivers in North America, carrying an average of 25 million U.S. tons of silt and sediment each year.

Corpus Christi Oil Refinery

Check out this Overview, which shows a maze of pipes and other equipment at an oil refinery in Corpus Christi, Texas. Due to its position on the Port of Corpus Christi — the fifth largest U.S. port and deepest inshore port on the Gulf of Mexico — much of the city’s economy is driven by the oil and petrochemicals industry. An average of 400,000 barrels of crude oil per day were exported from this port during 2018.

Rauchenwarth Fields

Colorful fields surround Rauchenwarth, a small municipality in eastern Austria. Located roughly 10.5 miles (17 km) outside of Vienna, Rauchenwarth has a population of about 700 people. Cold, wet winters and hot, dry summers make this region ideal for growing corn, wheat, barley, rye, sugar beets, sunflowers, and soybeans.

Kooragang Island Coal

Large piles of coal await shipment on Kooragang Island, part of the Port of Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia. Established in 1984 with a capacity of 15 million tonnes per annum, the island now has a capacity of at least 120 million tonnes per annum. In July 2013, a record 10.3 million tonnes of coal was processed through the Port of Newcastle, with 83 of 114 ships loaded at the Kooragang Island terminal.

The town of Palmanova, Italy, is recognized by its concentric layout known as a “star fort.” The rationale for this construction was that an attack on any individual wall could be defended from the two adjacent star points by shooting the enemy from behind. The three rings that surround Palmanova were completed in 1593, 1690, and 1813.

Crete Plasticulture

Plastic greenhouses cover a stretch of shoreline on the south coast of Crete — the largest and most populous of the Greek islands. Inside these greenhouses, which cover an area of roughly 6 square miles (15 sq. km), large quantities of fruits and vegetables are grown for export. In the upper right corner of this Overview is the Bramiana Reservoir, which was built in 1986 to meet the needs of the thousands of greenhouses surrounding it.
