Massive oil tankers are dwarfed by the Adriatic Sea just outside the Port of Venice, Italy. Last year, 26.4 million tons of freight passed through the port — an increase of more than 1 million tons from 2017. Of this, at least 7.7 million tons was refined petroleum products, and much of the rest was dry bulk goods and containerized cargo.

Tagebau Hambach Surface Mine

This Overview captures bucket-wheel excavators at the Tagebau Hambach open-pit mine in Niederzier and Elsdorf, Germany. These massive machines (up to 315 feet tall and 730 feet long) continuously scoop materials from the surface in order to extract lignite. Lignite, often referred to as “brown coal,” is a soft combustible sedimentary rock that is formed from naturally compressed peat and is used as a fuel for steam-electric power generation.

Lake Natron

Lake Natron is a salt lake in the Arusha Region of northern Tanzania, not far from the border with Kenya. It is shallow — less than 10 feet (3 m) deep — and varies in width depending on its water level. The color of Lake Natron is typical of saline lakes with high evaporation rates, in which salt-loving microorganisms thrive using photosynthesis to make their own food. A by-product of this photosynthesis causes deeper water to turn bright red and shallow parts of the lake to take on a rusty orange color.

California Wildflower Superbloom

Wildflowers blanket the hills around Lake Elsinore, a city in southern California. This explosion of poppies and other blossoms — called a "super bloom" — occurs when a rainy fall and winter are followed by cold temperatures that lock moisture in the ground. Seville Solar Concentrator

The Gemasolar Solar Concentrator in Seville, Spain, contains 2,650 heliostat mirrors that focus the sun’s thermal energy to heat molten salt flowing through a 460-foot-tall (140m) central tower. The molten salt then circulates from the tower to a storage tank, where it is used to produce steam and generate electricity. In total, the facility displaces approximately 30,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year.

Amsterdam

This Overview details the canal system of Amsterdam -- known as “Grachten.” In the early 17th century, when immigration was at a peak, a comprehensive plan for the city’s expansion was developed with four concentric half-circles of canals emerging at the main waterfront (seen on the right-hand side of this Overview). In the centuries since, the canals have been used for defense, water management, and transport. They remain a hallmark of the city to this day.

Crater Lake

My favorite destination on this trip was Crater Lake in Oregon. The lake's awe-inspiring, deep blue water sits in a crater that was formed 7,700 years ago by the collapse of a volcano. Rain and snowfall compensate for any evaporation as no rivers flow into or out of the crater. At 1,943 feet (592 m), the lake is the deepest in the United States. Happy Independence Day from Daily Overview!
