This particular district of Heerhugowaard is called Stad van de Zon (City of the Sun), because its 1,500 homes are directed toward the sun to harness solar power.

Salt pans are visible on Île de Noirmoutier, an island off the western coast of France. Here, more than 800 tonnes of salt are extracted annually through evaporation. Sea water is channeled into the basins via canals, which pass through reservoirs that get progressively shallower. Over time, evaporation causes the salt to crystallize and it is then carefully extracted from the pans.

Snowfall is common this time of year in North Dakota, but full cornfields are not — normally all of the corn is harvested by now. Some news reports estimate that the amount of unharvested corn in the state is the highest it has been since 2009.

Foxe Basin
Large chunks of swirling ice are seen here in Foxe Basin, Nunavut, Canada. Located between Baffin Island and Melville Peninsula, the shallow oceanic basin is blocked by ice for most of the year (this image was captured in July). Foxe Basin supports a high density of bearded seals and the largest walrus herd in Canada. It is also an important summering area for bowhead and beluga whales and narwhal.
